BYOC Parametric Multiband Compressor

Controls

  • Knob 1 - "Lo Comp": This knob determines the amount of compression applied to the low frequencies. Turn clockwise to increase compression.
  • Knob 2 - "Lo Level": This is the volume level for the low-frequency compressor. Turning the knob clockwise will increase the volume for this compressor.
  • Knob 3 - "Crossover Frequency": This knob sets the crossover point of the low- and high-frequency compressors. Turning the knob clockwise will expand the frequency band affected by the low-frequency compressor, reducing the frequency band affected by the high-frequency compressor. Turning counter-clockwise does the opposite.
  • Knob 1 - "Lo Comp": This knob determines the amount of compression applied to the high frequencies. Turn clockwise to increase compression.
  • Knob 2 - "Lo Level": This is the volume level for the high-frequency compressor. Turning the knob clockwise will increase the volume for this compressor.
  • Footswitch 1 - "On/Off": Switches the pedal between being active and bypassed.

Crossover Frequency

The Crossover Frequency Knob, as described above sets the crossover frequency point from where the low-frequency compressor "crosses over" to the high-frequency compressor.

  • Fully counter-clockwise: The crossover threshold is around 44 Hertz (Hz).
  • When set to the middle: The crossover threshold is around 800 Hz.
  • Fully clockwise: Crossover threshold is around 3300 Hz.

So, if fully counter-clockwise, the low-frequency compressor is only compressing a tiny band, from around 20 Hz to around 44Hz, while the high compressor is compressing from around 44Hz to maybe around 8000 Hz. If fully clockwise, then the treble compressor frequency band gets squeezed. It's important to pay attention to whichever compressor is compressing the greater part of the frequency spectrum as this compressor and its controls are going to be dominant. You may have to turn down the volume on the dominant compressor to make sure that low- and high- frequencies have equal volume levels.
